"Oscar the Detective or Dudie Dunne, The Exquisite Detective" was once famous as a dime novel, created for the less-sophisticated working classes increasingly cramming into industrializing cities. Stories like this one were light, sensational, and entertaining. The author was Harlan Page Halsey, a businessman and Brooklyn Board of Education member who lived a double life. His literary career was in shadow, and a few knew him in both capacities. Yet, his detective stories, including "Oscar the Detective," won the love and affection of many.

Autorenporträt
Kaufmann Kohler (1843–1926) was an important figure in American Jewish religious life, particularly known for his influential role in the development of Reform Judaism. Born in Fürth, Bavaria, he received a traditional Jewish education before pursuing academic studies in Germany where he was ordained as a rabbi. His erudition and scholarly pursuits led him to the United States where he would leave a lasting impression on Jewish thought and practice. Kohler occupied the pulpit in several congregations, most notably Temple Beth-El in New York City, and served as President of Hebrew Union College, the main seminary for Reform rabbis. His book 'Jewish Theology, Systematically and Historically Considered' is a seminal work that reflects his liberal approach to Judaism, emphasizing ethical monotheism and a rational, historical understanding of Jewish texts and tradition. This text not only offers a comprehensive overview of Jewish belief systems but also illustrates Kohler's commitment to reconciling tradition with modernity. His theological perspectives espoused a universalistic approach, attempting to present Judaism as a religion with a message for all humanity. Kohler's enduring impact is felt in the principles he championed, remaining a cornerstone of contemporary Reform Judaism.
