Kaufmann Kohler (1843–1926) was an important figure in American Jewish religious life, particularly known for his influential role in the development of Reform Judaism. Born in Fürth, Bavaria, he received a traditional Jewish education before pursuing academic studies in Germany where he was ordained as a rabbi. His erudition and scholarly pursuits led him to the United States where he would leave a lasting impression on Jewish thought and practice. Kohler occupied the pulpit in several congregations, most notably Temple Beth-El in New York City, and served as President of Hebrew Union College, the main seminary for Reform rabbis.
