Although nineteen evil kings reigned over Israel since its inception in 931 BC-as a result of the divided kingdom-the entire nation of Israel was still God's sovereign elect. In keeping with His promises concerning the Abrahamic covenant, God will not tolerate the mistreatment and the oppression of His people. Hence, Nahum's message signifies the complete and absolute obliteration of the Assyrian Empire and its capital city, Nineveh.
