Overwhelmed by the revolutionary political changes in Bulgaria and the rest of Eastern Europe, mathematician Svetlana Nikolova concentrates on her research. Constantly conflicted between her growing self confidence and lingering self-doubt, she spends whole semesters in the U.S.A., travels to international conferences, meets exciting people, competes and collaborates with foreign mathematicians, making new, true friends along the way. By contrast, back in Bulgaria she has to deal with familiar obstacles, and so she is promoted to Associate Professor much later than her peers. Also, it is painful for her to watch so many of her Bulgarian colleagues leave their country for a better life in the West. Svetlana determinedly resists the new trend for several years, but finally has to face her dilemma - to leave or remain in her native country.
