The disciple John often referred to himself as the "disciple whom Jesus loved" (John 13:23, John 19:26, John 20:2, John 21:7, John 21:20) because he knew the love of God personally. It was John who wrote the most quoted verses in the Gospels concerning God's love:

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16)

"He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love" (1 John 8)
