Jubilees are exceptional events drawn to conventionalized courses of time and claiming significance. From Milestone birthdays to university anniversaries, jubilees engender jubilation. In the context of the 650th anniversary of the University of Vienna, an international conference was held addressing the institutional mechanism of the jubilee: Which consequences has a pause in the continuity of institutional time? What types of cultural practices develop in the context of such events? What kinds of artefacts help establish jubilees and how do jubilees become a matter of artefacts themselves? What exactly is acclaimed and how are the events of the jubilees attributed with relevance? This volume presents articles based on the conference papers that discuss such essential questions systematically, historically and through instructive case studies.
