Educated at Catholic schools, Richard Atnally went to graduate school at the University of Florida from 1962-6. He then went first as an Instructor and Assistant Professor of English at Yale University. After six years there he taught at three other private and public universities on the east coast for an additional twenty-nine years. He published a dozen scholarly articles, and reviews, and read several papers at the Modern Language Association. He also wrote a history of ideas manuscript and a novel.
