Conte goes with him on "dates" and spends time chatting with him - a useful way of coaxing information out. She also has the courage to worm her way into the confidence of his Mafioso uncle Tony. And as time goes on, the feeling between the goldshield detective who hates what the mobsters do to the reputation of honest Italian-Americans and the young wiseguy who thinks he can go through life without paying for his actions edges into an odd and moving love story.

Angela Amato is a former New York Police Department detective who left the force to become a legal aid attorney. She is the coauthor, with Joe Sharkey, of the novels Lady Gold and Jackpot. Amato is now a television writer and producer, and was nominated for a Writers Guild of America Award for The Good Wife.

Joe Sharkey is an author and former New York Times columnist. In addition to his novels Lady Gold and Jackpot, both coauthored with Angela Amato, Sharkey has also written several nonfiction crime books.
