Since 1935, Alaska magazine has charted the development of our biggest, most mysterious state. With compelling stories on such events as earthquakes, tidal waves, grizzly and polar bear attacks, the Russian influence, the Gold Rush, the Japanese invasion of the Aleutians during World War II, hunting and fishing, the lives of sourdoughs, village life, and much more, The Last Frontier truly captures the essence of our largest state.Other chapters include the tale of the Eskimo commercial pilot, flying villagers across the Arctic. Or the one about the young woman who conducted the 1940 census in the Interior by dog team. Or the story about the family who placed their automobile on a raft, hooked paddles to the axles, and steered their home-built paddle-wheeler down the Yukon River to the first road-whereupon they removed the car from the barge, and drove home to Nebraska.Other stories you won't want to miss in this book include: Don Sheldon's floatplane rescue of eight men from white water; the mystery of Klutuk, the beast of the tundra; how Julie Collins's sled dog saved her life; the trials and tribulations of a nurse running a hospital on the arctic coast in 1921; an Athabascan writer interviews her grandmother, a medicine woman; newsworthy events across the state and much, much more.

Autorenporträt
For 8 years, Jill Shepherd served in the US Military as a Combat Medic in the Utah National Guard, while earning her degree in Nursing at Southern Utah University. In January 2004, Jill was deployed to Afghanistan, returning home in April 2005. She has earned 5 medals for her outstanding service, and was the first female finisher of the inaugural Afghanistan Marathon, making a total of 18 marathons she has completed together with earning the highest Fitness award during Army Basic Training. In addition to her US Military service, Jill received her Bachelor's of Science in Nursing at Southern Utah University. In 2006, she placed 3rd in the Cinco De Mayo Sailboat Regatta in Mexico, and in 2007, Jill was chosen one of four women for the "Women of Strength" featured in Muscle and Fitness Hers Magazine. Possibly one of the most unusual adventures for Jill though, has been her unexpected experience in becoming Miss Utah 2007, which took her to the national competition in the Miss America Pageant, January 2008, ending as a finalist and winning "America's Choice" for Miss America. Jill has since loved being a Nurse for 10 years in the Emergency Department at Primary Children's Hospital, bringing smiles to children's faces. Jill is happily married to Kerry Shepherd and they are enjoying beginning their own little family. They have 4 young kids who they easily get distracted by and have lots of fun with. Between being a proud Mom and housewife, she continues to inspire many as a Professional Speaker and Author .
