She attended a one-room schoolhouse in the segregated South, and went on to earn a PhD with great distinction. Financial hardships and racial injustices drove her to strive to have a positive impact on the world life. With a foundation built on family and faith, she become a lawmaker in the Michigan House of Representatives.
