In England and Wales, as in other jurisdictions, much attention has been paid to the criminal justice response to domestic violence. The response of the civil justice system has not been ignored, but has been somewhat marginalized. Mandy Burton is currently a Senior Lecturer in Law at the University of Leicester. She has carried out numerous empirical studies for UK Government departments, including a study of the effectiveness of the civil remedies for domestic violence under the Family Law Act 1996 and two studies of specialist domestic violence courts.
