Ironically, I have come to a deeper understanding of the poems and short stories included in Letting Go once I was asked to provide supplemental support for its publication. At first, I thought the title of my third book was simple and clear: leave behind what you struggle with in life. But in more closely thinking about that idea, I have realized the most perplexing notion we struggle with in our lives is not simply letting go of our biases, our pre-conceptions, and our judgements but rather confronting what is holding us back. Easier said than done, we frequently say, but that only affirms that it is easier to look away than fight indifference. I write my stories to identify and expand on my feelings and thoughts about the world around me, the people in it, and our institutions, and how looking within can lead to a path forward, if we are willing to take that first step.
