The present Festschrift is in honour of a doyen of Indian Librarianship, Prof. Des Raj Kalia. He is an intellectual of high order and is known for his oratory and sense of humour. He has been the First Asian recipient of the UNESCO Fellowship for training in Librarianship in United States and Europe. He has served the profession for more than 57 years and has held many assignments as a Library Expert in UN and UNESCO and has visited 37 countries of the World. He was the President of Indian Library Association during 1979-82 and has been the founder member of various organizations such as NBT, RRRLF, etc. Prof. Kalia has served in various institutions such as Delhi Public Library; National Library, Calcutta; Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi; Kashmir University; H. K. M. State Library, Bhubaneshwar etc. and is responsible for many innovations in organizational setup and services provided by these institutions. He was appointed Library Advisor to the Government of India in 1992 and has acted as Advisor on Five Year Plans of state governments. The Festschrift Volume is a humble tribute in honour of Prof. Kalia. It is in two volumes and contains 77 contributions from India and abroad. Both the volumes have six sections each. The papers in Volume 1 have been grouped as: Prof. D.R. Kalia: A Role Model; Technical Services; Information Services and Systems; Information Society and Library Profession; Information Marketing and Library Management; and L&IS Education & Research and in Volume 2 as: National and Public Libraries; Networks and Networking; Special Libraries; University Libraries; Use, Users Studies and Scientometrics; and Information Technology. The publication will be of immense use to students, practicing librarians, teachers of Library & Information Science, Planners, Policymakers in the field.
