Hubert Howe Bancroft (1832-1918) was an American historian who, with a staff of uncredited assistants, published a large number of popular histories on the American West and Pacific Northwest, as well as Mexico and Central America. The volumes were noteworthy for their somewhat indiscriminate use of primary source material.
