The issue of belonging is crucial to the study of identity within social anthropology. "Locality and Belonging" explores how territory can become intertwined with belonging and shape a sense of community, often through bodily images, imagined pasts and experienced space. The contributors provide an international overview of the relationship between locality and belonging, with rigorous case studies from the Congo, Togo, Amazonia, Indonesia, Zanzibar, South Africa, Argentina and the United Kingdom. Contexts range from the use of "natural" features of the environment to those of nationhood and post-colonial identity-making. The examination of notions of space, memory, ethnicity, the mnemonic use of objects, mythologies of football and history, feature as some of the themes which reveal and express the relationship between locality and belonging.
