Louisito was a very unexpected son, which crossed my mind one summer morning while I was about to go on vacation with my granddaughters. Those are the great blessings of creativity. It is a story about life's surprises and about the saving power of friendships. Years ago I had read an article that shocked me a lot. A parrot was confiscated from an elderly couple, with whom he had lived for more than thirty years. In the era when they had received it as a gift, in fact, there were no laws requiring proof of its origin through certain certificates, and therefore the result was that its existence became contrary to the laws. In a short period of time, the poor parrot lost all its feathers, as it was separated after many years from its beloved companions, locked up in a nature reserve, and then left to die as a poultice. A few months later, out of the same grief, his companions also died. It is true that we have to respect all laws, but there must be some discrimination in their application. They could have asked them to pay the fine and allow them to regularize their legal status. But what happened is the opposite. The orders were implemented without vision, violently, and no one cared that the execution of this sentence would lead to a state of certain despair. In my short novel, fortunately, my story will have a happy ending, and the love between Anselma, the retired old teacher, and her parrot Luisito will overcome all odds, and triumph over all legal estrangement. It's a story I love so much, and it always makes me feel comfortable because it's full of tenderness and irony. We will laugh, be moved and will be touched by the unexpected chaotic behavior of the parrot who will save the old teacher from a cruel and lonely old age. Susanna Tamaro, November 2012
