Mark is a successful, high-ranking manager at an international company in Poland and identifies as bisexual. His sexual encounters with men must remain a secret to everyone. This secret double life makes him vulnerable and cautious.
Patrik is a retired professor of health sciences who has been married to a man for over fifty years. He lives in the countryside outside of Copenhagen, Denmark. In a country where homophobia is virtually non-existent, he is open about his sexuality; all his family, friends, and colleagues know about him and his husband.
Mark and Patrik meet in a café in Warsaw. They spend the night together and quickly fall deeply in love. Although their relationship seems impossible, and both men know the challenges, their hearts ignore the warnings. As their circumstances gradually change significantly, they are presented with the opportunity to choose a different path. However, they encounter obstacles as they contemplate building a life together.
Despite challenging circumstances, Mark and Patrik build a solid and loving relationship. When their situation changes significantly, new possibilities they had never dreamed of make a life together a realistic option.
As they mature, they must break free from many chains connected to family, friends, and work regarding their behaviours and attitudes. Their biggest challenge is deciding where to establish a home and live securely in Poland, Denmark, or another country. Poland is not a viable option, as the Polish president has declared the LGBTQ+ movement to be more dangerous than Communism and the Nazis combined.
One by one, they break the chains of their past. They strengthen old bonds while new ones are formed. By changing their behaviour and embracing honesty, they can maintain friendships and renew and strengthen others. They realise that love encompasses many forms and has obstacles to overcome. Mark and Patrik decide to confront these challenges and support each other wholeheartedly. When Mark survives an attempted murder at his office, they come to understand how fortunate they are and that love is a precious gift.
With their context altered, they adapt to new possibilities and devise a strategy for their future together.
