Readers Please Note: This is book 3 of the series. Book 1 appears in the Monster Hunter anthology.
Meet Camille LaMontagne. Her parents have a surprise for her. A motorbike, a legacy as a voodoo priestess, and an arranged marriage. What's a girl to do?
I thought all I wanted was to get away from my responsibilities, my family, and my fiance. Apparently, when a person has a calling, there's no escape. Monsters were everywhere, and I had to commit to taking them out so no one had to suffer the loss of a loved one. I thought in Rhode Island, I'd be far enough away. I never expected to need my mother. She did the most mom thing ever. She showed up. With the help of generations of great voodoo priestesses, we were able to conquer the demon and wrangle the reapers. I was feeling confident in my abilities and completely humbled by my mother's presence. So, when James called and told us that there had been a Lycan uprising in our absence, I had to show up too. My mother left in her car immediately. I wasn't as lucky. I had to wait for the rain to stop. This was the problem with running away on a motorcycle. I could fight monsters, but I couldn't fight Mother Nature. By the time I reached Louisiana, and home, I had accepted this was where I belonged. I had accepted that I was going to follow in my mother's footsteps...mostly. I still had to be true to my passion. I was going to be a librarian by day and a priestess by night. This fit me. I felt like a superhero. As for James, I was ready to commit to him too. We'd kept in touch. We'd gotten to know each other through long phone calls. And I genuinely liked him, as much as it pained me to admit. Mom had asked if I was being defiant or if I genuinely couldn't see a future with James. That hit hard. At first, I wasn't sure if it was my natural rebellious instinct or if there was more to it. Now, I was ready to listen to my heart. I was falling for James thanks to his kind words, his intelligent conversations, and the care he showed for my well-being. I could see him being a supportive husband, the kind of man who wouldn't be threatened by a strong woman, but raise her even higher. I wanted everything I'd run from. I only hoped it wasn't too late to live my dream and have it all. I'd have my answer soon enough. Louisiana looked like something out of a nightmare. And the only way to wake up was to put those Lycans to sleep and make sure they never woke again.
