She moved to the United States during 1960, graduated from Houston Baptist University, and taught elementary bilingual education at Houston Independent School District (HISD). She graduated from the Institute of Children's Literature in Connecticut. In 2001 she retired from the US Department of Education in Washington, DC, where she worked for eleven years. She published her first bilingual book, Jessica's Summer Vacation (Las vacaciones de verano de Jéssica), and her second bilingual book, The Tale of Bad Guts and Bad Blood (El cuento de mala entrañita y mala sangre). Edia has two daughters, Edia Zoe Lugo Husband and Lynette Lugo Petrie; a son, David Lugo, married to Mónica; and five grandchildren. Her hobbies are writing for children, gardening, and reading.
