She knew very little about Mack as a person but she did know he owned a house on the outskirts of Las Vegas because he had sent her a picture of it in one of his letters. In Russia she had been lucky to share an apartment with five friends now she was married to a man who owned a house. Her happiness knew no bounds.
They pulled up in front of the two bedroom bungalow on Yale Street. It had a lawn and a few shabby shrubs. Svetlana longed to get her hands on that garden. She would make it a show piece. Her eye scanned the house for other changes she would make. She was married to a man who owned a house, which made the house hers to improve.
Mack pulled her two suitcases out of the back of the pickup while Svetlana climbed out of the cab on her own. Together they walked to the front door. Svetlana wondered if he would take her hand, but he didn't. There was nothing but space between them. She would change all that. She would please him beyond his wildest dreams.
Svetlana was surprised to find two men playing cards in her new kitchen.
"My friend Bunny Simkins," Mack said pointing to the short, muscular man with the heavy five o'clock shadow. He next pointed to the red head whose freckles almost tanned his skin. "This is Junior Edwards."
"Hello," Svetlana said, smiling uncertainly.
"Let me show you around," Mack said moving toward an inside door. "That's the living room. Here's the bathroom and here's our bedroom." He pulled her through the door. To her surprise Junior and Bunny followed.
"Okay," Mack said, putting her suitcase at the foot of the bed. "Show us your stuff."
