Autorenporträt
Mairtin O Direain was born in Sruthan on Inis Mor, the largest of the Aran Islands in Galway bay, in 1910. He left the island in 1928 and went to work in the post office in Galway. O Direain lived in Galway for nine years during which time he was a central figure in the cultural life of the city. He was an active member of An Taibhdhearc theatre, the National Irish Language Theatre which was established in 1928 by Micheal Mac Liammoir. He left Galway in 1937 and took up a position in Dublin as a civil servant. He remained interested in acting throughout his life and was also very involved in Conradh na Gaeilge. His first collection Coinnle Geala was published in 1942 which started a new era in Irish language poetry. O Direain went on to publish several more collections until his death in 1988 and would gain international recognition.
