Rosalind Cavaghan presents a much needed fresh insight into the mechanisms maintaining the state's production of gender inequality, along with new perspectives on how we can tackle them. Making Gender Equality Happen argues that we must examine why so many policy makers can't understand how to 'mainstream gender'. To do this, Cavaghan develops a new methodological and theoretical perspective Gender Knowledge Contestation Analysis and applies it to examine how Gender Mainstreaming did, and did not, work in the EU's Science and Research policy. Findings provide fresh insights which help us to better understand and implement gender equality policies, in the changing European political context.
