Ann Sophia Stephens (1810-1886) was a pioneering American writer and editor who played a significant role in the development of popular fiction in the United States. Born in Derby, Connecticut, she began her literary career by writing stories and poems for various magazines, quickly gaining prominence with her remarkable narrative skills and a keen eye for dramatic situations. Stephens was a prolific author, penning numerous short stories, novels, and serials, with 'Malaeska: The Indian Wife of the White Hunter' being one of her most famous works. Published in 1860, 'Malaeska' is widely considered the first dime novel, a term which came to represent a genre of inexpensive, sensational fiction that captivated a broad reading public (Johannsen, 1950). Her work typically blended elements of romance, adventure, and domestic fiction, while often engaging with contemporary social issues. Stephens served as the editor of the influential Peterson's Magazine, where she used her platform to support and publish other women writers.
