It is a story about the need to bring order in a complex social matrix. The author wanted to share some of the trials, successes and failures of early Romans and how they coped with managing to raise their standards of living. The Rome of the period laid out in this book is indeed a whisper of a dream which, as we know, ripened to fruition and eventually withered. Some might say Imperial Rome became too big for its britches; the author says, it merely lost its purpose.
