Xu Changfu, born in Meishan, Sichuan Province, P. R. China in 1964, received his Ph.D. from Jilin University in 2000. He is a distinguished professor in the Department of Philosophy, the chairman of the Academic Committee of the Institute of Marxist Philosophy and Chinese Modernization, and the director of the Centre for Practical Philosophy at Sun Yat-sen University, Guangzhou. He currently focuses on metaphysics, practical philosophy and Marxist philosophy. He is the author of Theory-thinking and Engineering-thinking: Overstepping and Demarcation between two Thinking-modes (the 1st edition, Shanghai: Shanghai People’s Publishing House, 2002; the 2nd edition, Chongqing: Chongqing Press, 2013), Towards Practical Wisdom: A New Approach to Practical Philosophy (Beijing: Social Sciences Academic Press, 2008), An Academic Approach to Marxist Study (Beijing: Social Sciences Academic Press, 2010), Saving Practice (vol. 1) (Chongqing: Chongqing Press, 2012), as well as around 100 articles published in journals. He has studied, visited or given lectures at universities or institutes in Canada, Australia, Singapore, Japan, the USA, the UK, Greece, Switzerland, Germany, France, the Netherlands and Belgium.
