Dr. Stern is the Chief of The Avery D. Weisman, M.D. Psychiatry Consultation Service (a service that performs more than 3,500 new psychiatric consultations each year on medical and surgical floors) and Director of the Office of Clinical Careers at the Massachusetts General Hospital. He is a Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School (HMS) and the first endowed Professor of Psychosomatic Medicine/Consultation at HMS. Dr. Stern has co-authored more than 300 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters as well as 17 books. He has lectured across the nation on medical psychiatry and directed numerous postgraduate courses. Dr. Stern is a Past-President of the Academy of Psychosomatic Medicine (APM) and is a Fellow of both the American Psychiatric Association and the APM. An ad hoc reviewer for more than 30 journals, he is the Editor-in-Chief of Psychosomatics and serves on the editorial boards of seven peer-reviewed journals. In addition, he has worked with the National Board of Medical Examiners (on panels for standard-setting, item-modeling, and item-writing). On three occasions he has won the coveted "Best Teacher Award¿ from the graduating residents at the MGH/McLean Hospital Psychiatric Residency Training Program, and he has received the Thomas P. Hackett Award from the APM (its highest honor).
