When I began coaching more than 20 years ago, I used to offer an hour-long free coaching session to everyone who asked about my coaching. I aimed to enroll them as ongoing paid clients. Sometimes it worked and they'd become committed clients. Other times, they would thank me, and tell me they'd get back to me. Of course, I never heard from them again.

I knew there had to be a better way to make sure that those I spent time with, in the inquiry stage, were serious about coaching and a good match!

The answer was to change from a free coaching session to a shorter (the length can vary) assessment or Discovery session. This qualified the prospective client and allowed them to check me out without giving too much free coaching. Mastering the Coaching Discovery Session outlines the method I successfully used.
