Narrative art has become one of the greatest means relied upon by men of thought and reform to broadcast their ideas, the conclusions of their research, and their views on life's affairs. With this new development, stories have moved beyond the scope of the purpose of entertainment or wasting time. But who is responsible for this development? The credit undoubtedly goes to the serious reader, who is not inclined to read stories that depict bloody incidents and violent scenes, or that depict dreamy romantic encounters. This type of stories has been eliminated in Europe and has been swept away by the current of the new genre that combines entertainment and benefit, as it aims to broadcast opinions and social observations in the guise of stories. This book includes among its pages a selection of stories by the Russian writer Leo Tolstoy, where the reader enters his story world with ease and admiration.
