This book discusses SI units, standards and the importance of using lasers for measurement in modern metrology, including the redefinition of SI units over time, which recently culminated in the agreement to redefine the kilogram and will take effect in May 2019. Real-life case studies are also provided; from the implications for measuring times at the Olympics, to the impacts in criminal investigations.

Autorenporträt
Masatoshi Kajita graduated from the Department of Applied Physics at the University of Tokyo in 1981 and obtained his PhD from the same establishment in 1986. After working at the Institute for Molecular Science, he joined the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) in 1989. In 2009, he was guest professor at the Université de Provence in Marseille, France.
