This is the second edition of the Medical and Dental Guidance Notes (MDGN), created by an IPEM working group. Following publication of the first edition in 2002, this edition addresses the safe use of ionising radiations (e.g., radioactive substances, X-rays, protons, neutrons, and electron beams) in the UK but does not address lasers, MRI, ultrasound, ultraviolet, or other non-ionising radiations. These notes include general best practices of the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations (IR(ME)R) 2017, but they do not repeat or interpret legal requirements and guidance in the legislation. Following the instructions is optional but should be enough to comply with the law. Legally responsible parties should familiarise themselves with the legislation through this means.

Chapters 1 and 2 lay the groundwork for regulatory requirements, and succeeding chapters create application-specific requirements. Chapters 3 and 4 include safe diagnostic X-ray procedures for medical exposures and interventional radiology, while Chapters 5 and 6 cover hospital and university dental departments and their equipment. Chapters 7-9 cover radiotherapy, including external beam and brachytherapy, while Chapters 10-15 cover nuclear medicine. This second edition adds Chapter 11 on Positron Emission Tomography. Chapters 16-20 are relevant to nuclear medicine and brachytherapy professionals who use radioactive sources. Radioactive patients leaving the administering department, radioactive material storage, transport, and disposal, and radioactive substance contingency planning and emergency procedures are covered. Several new appendices help readers apply rules and safety standards to their departments.
