This book addresses the approach to starting treatment with psychotropic medications. The reader is advised that psychotropic medications are the last alternative after all other choices are considered for trial. The point of view is the office setting and not the hospital setting where there is no urgency because the client is suicidal, homicidal, or gravely disabled to the point where only psychiatric hospital care is adequate. The client has time to learn about medications and try alternatives to medications prior to starting medications. In the hospital setting the benefits of the medications outweigh the risks because the client is suicidal, homicidal, or gravely disabled. In the office the risks of the medicaitons may outweigh the benefits such that the client may wish to try cognitive behavioral therapy, meditation, and other alternatives before accepting the risks of medications.
