Mem and Heit

The Netherlands (or Holland) was invaded by the forces of Hitler in 1940. Their occupation lasted 5 years, and thousands of Jews were rounded up and transported to Hitler's concentration camps. Seventy percent of the Jewish population in Holland perished in the Nazi concentration camps.

Beside the German occupiers, Dutch sympathisers for the Nazi's, made life difficult for those who resisted the occupation. These were know as 'verraaiers' or traitors, and were feared as much as the occupiers.

For the last 18 months of the World War my parents hid a Jewish family. A father, mother and their two young children.

Their story reads just like that, a story, but in all earnesty this story entails so much more then an ordinary 'adventure'. It was a story of life and death. Not only for the Jewish family, but also for my parents. Any other outcome and there would not have been an 'I', and thus therefore no story to tell.

It is a story of bravery, courage and above all, empathy.

Anne Franck hid in a cupboard, the family Franken in a cellar.

The 'book' is only a few pages long, but the story needs to be told and preserved for future generations.

Autorenporträt

Sybe Starkenburg was trained in navigation for the Merchant Marine. Much of his life was spent sailing the oceans, from the rank of Cadet to the rank of Captain, on cargo ships, bulk carriers, tankers and tugs. For fifteen years he managed marine diamond mining vessels on the West Coast of Southern Africa.
He is now retired and joint bookstore owner with his wife of 40+ years. The bookstore is situated in an idyllic village on the grounds of a farm, i.e. in the middle of nowhere.
The shop is his reference library, his office and source of inspiration.
His specific interests are science, philosophy and Dante's Divine Comedy. Not knowing where to find Truth after abandoning religion, and wanting to share the experience of his search, he decided on writing the 'The Tightrope of the Absurd'.
