"Memoirs of an Ex-Atheist" tells the story of Mohamed, who travels to America and decides to turn away from religion, influenced by communism and socialism. While working in a library in New York, he discovers the pleasures of atheism, but clashes with his colleague Martha Higgins, who invites him to rethink Sufi faith. The novel deals with Mohamed's intellectual journey and presents his struggles with atheism and faith, as he interacts with the works of Mustafa Mahmoud and Abdel Rahman Badawi, and discusses the theory of evolution adopted by atheists.
