Jamaican-born Marcus Garvey (188740) was a proponent of the Black Nationalism and Pan-Africanism movements, which inspired the Nation of Islam and Rastafarianism. Committed to the belief that African Americans need to secure financial independence from white-dominated society, he founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association and the African Communities League.
