When they entered his office, Joel got straight down to business. There was no coffee offered or small talk made. "Sarah has told me a lot about your problems and asked me to help you out as I'm one of the few people who can," he said brusquely.
Melissa bristled but had enough sense to keep her mouth closed. After seething for a few long seconds, she re-found her smile. "What exactly has my darling sister told you?"
"She's told me that you're out of work, out of love and probably homeless," Joel said matter-of factly. He could have added that she was also virtually bankrupt as he had run a detailed credit report on her. Certainly there was no way the banks would consider her as credit-worthy for at least another six years.
"My sister talks too much," Melissa answered softly. "But that is a pretty accurate description of where I am at the moment and yes, all my worldly possessions are in the boot as I am homeless as of this morning."
Joel made a steeple of his hands and looked at the girl over the top of them. She suddenly looked like the frightened little girl she probably was. "Sarah told me all about you because we are very close and because she cares a lot for you. She knows I can offer you a job with good money and a place to stay while we sort out your finances."
"What do you call good money?"
"How does three thousand a month sound?"
Mel couldn't believe her ears. "You're kidding, that's a fortune!" She paused for thought, before adding flippantly. "What would I have to do for that?"
