Crime photographer Nellie Burns and Basque Sheriff Charlie Asteguigoiri travel from central to northern Idaho to investigate bootleggingand the town officials who might be involved. While there, a suspicious mine explosion pulls them into a second investigation, so they send a wire to retired miner Rosy Kipling, asking him to join them. He brings Nell's black Lab, Moonshine, and the team is then complete.
While Charlie roams the backcountry in search of illegal stills, Nell questions survivors of the explosion. Rosy descends into the principal mine to listen and pry. The two investigations lead all three to discover secrets and liesfrom "soda drink" parlors, local brothels, and worker hints whispered deep in the mine shaftsthat have deadly consequences. All four of them long for their high desert home but they cannot return until they expose the criminals and lay bare the truth before their luck runs out.

Autorenporträt

Julie Weston grew up in Idaho and practiced law for many years in Seattle, Washington. Her book, The Good Times Are All Gone Now: Life, Death and Rebirth in an Idaho Mining Town (University of Oklahoma Press, 2009) won Honorable Mention in the 2009 Idaho Book of the Year Award. She appeared on a C-Span2/Book TV interview in December, 2013. Both an essay and a short story were nominated for Pushcart Prizes. She is the author of the Nellie Burns and Moonshine Mysteries: Moonshadows, a Finalist in the Mary Sarton Literary Awards; Basque Moon, winner of the 2017 WILLA Award in Historical Fiction; Moonscape, Bronze winner of the INDIE Foreword Awards; Miners' Moon, Bronze winner in the Will Rogers Medallion Awards for Mystery; and Moon Bones, published by Encircle Publications in October, 2022.
