I was - and still am - a believer that living literature should not be exhausted by foreign literatures, transmitted from them and translated from them. That would rather consume it and cause it to lose this strong life that comes to it from its immortal personality and ancient origins. It must balance its strength that comes from himself, and this emergency force that comes to him from others, and for that reason I used to publish these chapters on Sundays, and publish chapters on ancient Arabic literature on Wednesdays, thus balancing between reviving ancient literature and enriching it with what I presented to it from the material of modern European literature. To me, some success has been written for me in these steps, which I took in those bitter sweet years, which I remember now with much love and tenderness, and with much satisfaction and pride. Because they were the years of the true Egyptian Renaissance; Because these were the years of true Egyptian freedom, which was filled with nothing but truth and public benefit.
