Radionuclide or metabolic therapy offers the possibility of targeted therapy with fewer side-effects if tumour specific radiopharmaceuticals are developed. Accurate dose planning and correct estimate of the therapeutic effect are then necessary. The objective of personalized dose planning is to determine the absorbed dose per unit of activity administered. If this ratio can be accurately calculated, determining the activity to be given to the patient is then possible in order to achieve the required "therapeutic" effect.

This book covers the applications of Monte Carlo (MC) calculations in therapeutic nuclear medicine from basic principles, to computer implementations of software packages and their applications in radiation dosimetry and treatment planning in targeted radionuclide therapy. It is written for medical physicists, biomedical engineers and physicians as well as radiation oncologists, and can serve as a supplement art text for medical imaging, radiation dosimetry and nuclear engineering graduate courses in sciences, medical and engineering faculties.

The different chapters describe the fundamental concepts of nuclear and hybrid imaging instrumentation and quantitative imaging, internal radiation dosimetry and radiobiology aspects of targeted radionuclide therapy, then discuss the various components and steps required for implementing a dose calculation and treatment planning methodology in targeted radionuclide therapy. Some computer programs are described and illustrated with some useful features and clinical applications. Other potential and future applications of MC techniques are also discussed.

This book is an ideal research and reference text for Scientists working in academic or industrial environments focusing on translational research and therapeutic nuclear medicine and radiology.
