In early modern Europe, music-theatrical patterns of representing the foreign 'Other' helped shape relations with the Ottoman Empire. Accordingly, hybridity must be understood as a dynamic practice playing with cultural blends and borrowings, albeit possibly (re-)producing inequalities, ambiguities, and clichés.
