Maxim Gorky is considered one of the founders of socialist realism, and his works had a great influence on the writers who contemporaneous him, not only in Russia but outside its borders. His novels and theatrical works continue to attract the attention of a wide audience of readers and viewers. Critics believe that the facts mentioned in his book "My Childhood" may not reflect the reality of his life in his grandfather's house, and perhaps the writer gave his imagination free rein to present a literary work rather than a documentary work, even though those who know him emphasized his grandfather's excessive cruelty, and Gorky mentioned many incidents that reflect his grandfather's cruelty. But he owed it to his memorization of the Psalms and passages from the Bible, which allowed him to excel in the church primary school he attended. Gorky gave his grandmother an aura of sanctity in his literary works, even though his grandfather used to describe her as a "malicious witch." For him, she was an example of tenderness and warmth, and was a source of beautiful stories, even though she was a simple woman who could not read and write.
