The boys lives are perfect as they are free to roam, and growing up a little each day as they find responsibility for their actions. Live was different in the 1940's and you will laugh out loud at some of their adventures and cry at others.
Comparing living in a time without radio, tv and the social media and finding value and structures normalcy in a much simplier time. The boys take responsibility for their lives and are taught by their mother to be honest and trustworthy, and they are as far as she knows.
The small town is hugely patriotic and the war is always in the forefront, living without all but the necessities of life and buying war bonds even when no money is available. Some of the characters are defined that will make you smile and others will make you fighting mad.
Polio is at its peak during this time and everyone is frightened when one gets a fever, but life goes on. You will be reminded of how your parents, or grandparents lived in this time and what they endured and how closely knit they became.
The fun takes a turn when the father comes home. He most certainly has PTSD, although it wasn't definded as such. A man who loves whiskey but it controls his life and he turns into an abusive father and husband. The change in the lives of his children and wife are artfully described and you will feel the emotion as they try to cope in the changes in their lives when he returns from Europe.
Most of the book is based on actual circumstances, except for the ones I changed a little and a few outright lies. This is first of a trilogy written by a very successful man who knows his early life led him to the adult he became
