Janie Peña Menchaca earned a bachelor's degree in organizational administration from St. Mary's University. She has been a volunteer in jail and prison ministries and women's and children's shelters, and currently assists individuals and families experiencing domestic violence and homelessness including at Haven for Hope. Janie is also a member of the San Antonio Police Department's Volunteers in Policing Unit. Janie and her husband, Abel, and dog, SuzieQ, live in San Antonio.
