Todd, the not-so-grim reaper, brother to Kaylee's smokin'-hot boyfriend, has scored them tickets for a concert of teen sensation Eden. Turns out it wasn't just a nice gesture, though: for one thing, the support act is a young girl that Todd was in love with with when he was, well, alive. For another, the main gig comes to a crashing halt when Eden keels over dead on stage... And Kaylee doesn't wail, because Eden has no soul.
To Kaylee's horror, she learns that hopeful teens who want to be singers, models or actors are cheated out of their immortal souls by the dozens, possibly the hundreds. They are told that they don't need their souls - they are NOT told that this essentially means they will go to hell when they die.
The same thing happened to Todd's love Addison, and her 13-year old sister is about to make the same mistake. Todd wants to save them - at any cost.
Pros:
The author cranks up the suspense right from the start, and things stay interesting (and sometimes nail-biting nerve-wrecking) until the very end. Addy is a likable character, an innocent teen who stumbled into a world she doesn't comprehend - I couldn't help but keep hoping and wishing for a happy ending for her.
The writing is great. We learn more about the characters we already know, which gives them more depth, and are introduced to interesting new characters as well. It becomes very clear in this book that the author is willing to give her characters serious flaws, and to surprise us by having things go wrong despite all the best intentions.
The world-building is excellent. With each chapter, the world of Soul Screamers gets more complex - and dark and dangerous.
Cons:
I honestly can't think of any!
If you liked the first novel, you will definitely like this one! It's an entertaining read that keeps you turning the pages, and when I'd finished it, I was eager to start the next novel of the series.
