This interdisciplinary volume approaches the semantics and practice of close relationships between friendship and patronage in their connection to a specific culture. Affects, symbols, rituals, forms of interaction and actors' self-descriptions in close relationships are all examined in order to reflect three central questions: What are we actually doing when we construct types or even typologies of social relationships? What is the significance of affects as community-shaping elements? What practices and semantics bring about certain 'community policies'?
