I recommend that the Emperor be buried on the banks of the Seine among the French people who loved him with all his heart. This hope seemed impossible when it was written, but years quickly passed and circumstances changed. By July 1830, France, led by one man, expelled the Bourbons from its throne and placed the crown on the crossroads of Louis-Philippe, Duke of Orleans. On July 29, 1832, Napoleon's only son died. He was twenty-one years old at the time. With his death, all direct traces of Bonaparte's descendants were removed. France was gradually liberated from Allied surveillance and control. The French took the opportunity to celebrate the anniversary of Bonaparte's death on the fifth day of May 1840 and submitted a petition to the British government demanding the remains of the Emperor. The government agreed and hoped that this would be the beginning of a new era between the two nations and hoped to bury the grudges of the past in the grave prepared to receive the Emperor's remains.
