Produktbeschreibung
Karl von Scherzer's "Narrative of the Circumnavigation of the Globe by the Austrian Frigate Novara" offers a meticulously detailed account of the first Austrian scientific expedition to circumnavigate the globe, conducted between 1857 and 1859. Blending travelogue with scientific observation, Scherzer employs a rich, descriptive literary style that captures both the grandeur of distant lands and the nuances of cultural encounters. Set against the backdrop of the 19th century's fervent spirit of exploration and burgeoning nationalism, this work reflects the era's dual interest in scientific discovery and imperial ambition, framing an Austrian perspective on global exploration amidst the broader context of European colonial ventures. Karl von Scherzer, a geologist and explorer, was instrumental in the Novara expedition and brought his extensive scientific training to bear on this narrative. His background, steeped in both academia and adventure, propelled him to document not just the landscapes and peoples encountered, but also the scientific findings that emerged from the voyage. Scherzer's comprehensive approach integrates personal reflection with empirical observation, providing readers insight into the characteristics and challenges of the varied regions explored. This compelling narrative is highly recommended for readers interested in the intersections of science, exploration, and cultural encounters during the age of imperialism. Scherzer's work is not only a travel memoir but also a vital historical document that enriches our understanding of 19th-century globetrotting endeavors, making it an essential addition to the libraries of historians, geographers, and travel enthusiasts alike.

Autorenporträt
Karl von Scherzer (1821-1903) was an Austrian explorer, diplomat and natural scientist. He began his working life as a printer, but after inheriting a fortune, Scherzer was able to travel extensively. Scherzer was a member of a scientific expedition traveling via the frigate Novara around the world. From that expedition he brought back enough cocoa leaves that Albert Niemann subsequently isolated cocaine.
