ABOUT THE AUTHOR Ellen Ann Callahan is an author and freelance writer. Her articles and essays have appeared in Maryland Life Magazine, The Washington Post, Washington Family Magazine, and Chicken Soup for the Breast Cancer Survivor¿s Soul. She was an adoption attorney until she retired to pursue the writing life. She lives with her husband in Deep Creek, Maryland. IN ELLEN'S WORDS I¿m a native Marylander. I graduated from the University of Maryland and received my law degree from the University of Baltimore School of Law. I worked in private practice and eventually opened my own firm. My husband, Ron, also hails from Maryland. We met in college. Ron and I grew our family through adoption. Friends and colleagues took notice. ¿If you¿ve done it yourself, you must know what to do,¿ they¿d say. They referred clients to me. Word got around. Within a few years, I practiced adoption law exclusively. I loved the field of adoption law. It was ever-evolving and intellectually challenging. I met many stellar people along the way¿judges, colleagues, and adoption professionals. I was blessed with courageous clients¿adoptive parents and birth parents alike. Many of them send me cards, complete with pictures and family updates. What an amazing way to make a living! All the while, I wrote for fun and pleasure. My free-lance articles and essays were published in Maryland Life Magazine, the Washington Post, Washington Parent Magazine, and Chicken Soup for the Breast Cancer Survivor¿s Soul. Overnight, it seems, Ron retired and our children became adults. I closed my office and made the leap to the writing life. We moved to Deep Creek, the lovely Western Maryland resort we discovered on our first anniversary. Soon afterward, I was selected as an Angel in Adoption by the Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute. It was an immense honor and great way to end my adoption career. Now I¿m writing novels surrounded by the beauty of the Appalachian Mountains.
