The present volume includes comparative literature studies
and essays that I have published in various journals over
the past twenty years. The authors I deal with are very
different: from Sei Shonagon to Franz Werfel, from Will
Self to Ludmila Ulitskaya, from J. R. R. Tolkien to Roberto
Bolaño, from Marie Darrieusecq to Andrei Codrescu, from
C. S. Lewis to Patrick Modiano, from Alasdair Gray to David
Mitchell. In the Addenda, I also chose to publish a separate
comparative study on the cinema of Andrei Tarkovski and
Lars von Trier.
I wrote captivated by the authors in this book, stimulated
by their worlds and ideas. By their faith in literature and
sometimes by their battle for literature. I hope that my
interpretation of each individual author will be stimulating
for the reader.
