Alexander Lange Kielland was born on February 18, 1849, in Stavanger, Norway, into a prominent and affluent family. His father, Jens Zetlitz Kielland, was a successful businessman, and his mother, Christiane Lange, came from a family with strong cultural and academic ties. Kielland's privileged upbringing allowed him to receive a comprehensive education, which laid the foundation for his future literary career. Kielland attended Stavanger Cathedral School and later studied law at the University of Christiania (now the University of Oslo).
