This brief summarizes the role of certain catalysts and associated processes that are involved in the reduction or elimination of hazardous substances from wastewater and the exploitation of renewable raw materials. The authors begin by providing a summary of the most recent developments in catalysts used in the advanced oxidation of organic pollutants in aqueous phase. Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPS) are described in terms of homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts. Some emphasis is placed on the role nanocatalysts, perovskite-type catalysts, and green catalysts play in several AOPs such as Fenton Chemistry, photocatalytic oxidation, and the hybrid technologies that combine different processes. Catalyst preparation, characterization, reaction chemistry, and process technology are described. Specific wastewater case studies which illustrate the role of these catalysts in AOPs completes the brief.
Süheyda Atalay, Professor Dr, Süheyda Atalay is a Professor in the Chemical Engineering Department, Faculty of Engineering, Ege University. She completed her BSc and MSc degrees at the Faculty of Engineering-Chemical Engineering-Ege University, in 1974 and 1976, respectively. She has been awarded by PhD in 1984. She has been working at Ege University Chemical Engineering Department since 1975 with different positions starting with Research Assistant to full time Professorship. She has published over 20 papers in international journals and she has oral and poster communications at international conferences. She has been teaching in different areas of Chemical Engineering, particularly in subjects related with Reaction Engineering, Chemical Engineering Design, Modeling and Simulation, Chemical Engineering Economics, Kinetics and Catalysis, Principles of Heterogeneous Catalysis, Hazardous Waste Treatment, Multiphase Reactors, Principles of Heterogeneous Catalysis and Optimization in Chemical Reactors. She has a considerable experience of Treatment of Gas and Liquid Pollutants, Advanced Oxidation Processes, Catalyst Preparation and Characterization and Catalytic Reactions. Besides the teaching responsibilities she has also been in charge of many administrative positions such as Head of Department, Member of Executive Administrative Committee and recently Dean of the Faculty. At University level Professor Atalay is coordinating institutionally both international (ERASMUS) and national (FARABİ, MEVLANA) mobility programmes. She has been responsible for the implementation of ECTS/DS studies at EGE University. She is a member of the Turkish National Team of Bologna Experts since 2014. She is the National Academic Contact Person of Turkey for ECTS/DS issues. She has a great experience on the accreditation on Engineering Programmes, she is one of the programme evaluators of engineering accreditation body in TURKEY, MÜDEK (Association for Evaluationand Accreditation of Engineering Programmes). She has been taken part of the thematic network projects Teaching and Research in Engineering Education (TREE) and European and Global Engineering Education Academic Network (EUGENE) which supported by the European Commission. Gülin ERSÖZ, Assistant Professor Gülin ERSÖZ is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Engineering in Chemical Engineering at Ege University. She received her bachelor and master degrees in Chemical Engineering at Ege University in 1999 and 2002, respectively. She has been awarded by PhD in 2009. She has been working at Ege University Chemical Engineering Department since 1999. Her research interests are mainly Wastewater Treatment by Advanced Oxidation Processes and Catalyst Preparation and Characterization. She has several publications on generally wastewater treatment in international peer-reviewed journals and oral and poster communications at international conferences. She has been teaching Reaction Engineering, Hazardous Waste Treatment and Differential Equation courses. Ersöz is the co-coordinator of international (ERASMUS) and the coordinator of national (MEVLANA) mobility programmes of the Chemical Engineering Department.
