Such properties are suitable for use in the food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical fields. This circular approach could be usefully employed in the industry to develop and commercialize new nutraceuticals and/or functional food that guarantee a considerable increase in the economic worth of the wastes, while producing beneficial effects on human health. Umile Gianfranco Spizzirri, PhD, is a permanent technical staff member at the Department of Pharmacy, Health and Nutritional Sciences of the University of Calabria, Italy. He has published more than 120 research articles in refereed international journals as well as numerous book chapters and conference presentations. His research interests focus on 1) Enhancement of waste products from the agri-food chain through eco-friendly extraction techniques; 2) Design and synthesis of polymeric systems useful in the food and pharmaceutical fields; 3) Validation of innovative analytical methods for the determination of natural and xenobiotic contaminants in complex matrices.
